David Keyte on Bend’s summer traditions

“It’s not just shopping. It’s a gathering place and a summer tradition.”

David Keyte uses those words about Northwest Crossing Farmers Market. His interest goes beyond what is for sale: the live music, local vendors and people spending time together make the market a way to experience Bend’s community at an ordinary weekend pace.

“My favorite part is the man-made river rapids. Just a little thrill to the lazy river float.”

That is his personal highlight of the filmed river outing. Use the current float guidance below to choose the route that fits your abilities; enjoying the river does not require taking the rapids. Together, the market, music and water show the everyday summer experiences David wanted to capture.

A good summer day in Bend does not need to revolve around an expensive reservation. This Check It Out episode follows three local traditions: floating the Deschutes River, listening to music in Drake Park, and wandering through Northwest Crossing Farmers Market.

The fun is in the combination of water, music, local food, and people enjoying the season. Some experiences have free admission, while equipment, transport, food, and shopping can add to the cost. Plan for the parts you want to spend on and enjoy the rest at your own pace.

Float the Deschutes with a plan

The episode follows the popular in-town river float from the Riverbend Park area toward Drake Park. For a visitor, it is a memorable way to see the city from a different angle. For locals, it can be an easy summer tradition—provided the conditions and your group’s abilities fit.

Use the park district’s current float guide before entering the water. Wear a life jacket, use equipment intended for river recreation, and plan your return trip. The river is cold and moving, and there are no lifeguards.

At the whitewater park, follow the designated floater route. The center whitewater channel is for experienced whitewater users, and the habitat channel is closed to recreation. You can get out before the Colorado Avenue Bridge and walk around the rapids to re-enter at McKay Park. A mellow outing is a perfectly good choice.

Owning a tube does not make the whole trip cost-free: rentals and shuttle transport may cost extra. Check the current seasonal services rather than relying on the arrangements shown in the video.

Enjoy music in Drake Park

Munch & Music is a summer concert series in Drake Park with free concert admission. The episode captures the atmosphere: music by the river, food vendors, and a place for people to spend an evening together.

Bring a picnic if that suits your budget, or leave room for a food-truck treat. Purchases and some additional activities can cost money even when the concert is free. Check the organizer’s calendar and event guidelines for the next season; a summer video is inspiration, not a year-round event schedule.

Browse Northwest Crossing Farmers Market

The third stop is Northwest Crossing Farmers Market. The video shows produce, flowers, local goods, and the pleasure of browsing without needing a tightly planned outing.

The market is seasonal. Its published 2026 season ran Saturdays from May 30 through September 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; check the official calendar for future dates. You can enjoy the setting without buying everything that catches your eye. If you do want to shop, setting a small budget first keeps the day comfortable.

Keep the day flexible

These stops do not have to happen on one day. Choose a safe-weather river outing, a concert evening, or a market morning, then build around the part your group is most excited about. Pack water, plan the transport, and leave some room for a spontaneous snack.
