Why Phil’s Trail matters to David Keyte

“I first discovered Phil’s trail head in 2013 when my uncle came to visit and we did a mountain biking expedition here.”

David Keyte’s connection to Bend includes time on its trails, not just showing homes. In the episode, he explains how that early ride helped draw him into the Bend lifestyle. It gives this itinerary a personal starting point: riding, refueling and slowing down outdoors.

“Some of our favorites are Shim Sham, Good Egg, and Sebastian Seafood.”

David names those stops while visiting The Grove. His filmed picnic picks include sushi and smoked-salmon spread from Sebastian Seafood. That makes the lunch stop practical as well as personal: pick food you enjoy and can carry to Shevlin, then leave time to sit beside Tumalo Creek.

Some of the best Bend days have a simple shape: get outside, find something good to eat, and give yourself time to enjoy it. In this Check It Out episode, the route starts at Phil’s Trail, stops at The Grove in Northwest Crossing, and ends with a picnic beside Tumalo Creek in Shevlin Park.

Begin at Phil’s Trail

The video opens with mountain biking through the pines. Phil’s is part of the experience that drew the episode’s host into Bend life: a place to ride, explore, and get absorbed in something beyond the day’s to-do list.

The Forest Service’s Phil’s Trailhead page identifies access to mountain biking and hiking trails of varying difficulty. That variety matters. Choose a route that fits your experience, check the trail map, and pay attention to signs and other users rather than assuming every trail is an easy loop.

Before setting out, check West Bend trail and road alerts and current conditions. Forest work, weather, and seasonal closures can change the available ride. A shorter outing can be just as satisfying as a big mileage day.

Pick up lunch at The Grove

Next, the team heads to The Grove Market Hall. The episode features grab-and-go food from Sebastian Seafood, including sushi and a smoked-salmon spread, before taking the meal outside.

Sebastian’s current listing describes a seafood market with prepared food and specialty goods. Check the menu and hours before your visit; the sushi special mentioned in the original 2025 video should not be treated as a current price promise.

The picnic does not need to be elaborate. Pick food that travels well, bring water, and pack what you need to carry your rubbish back out. If everyone wants something different, a market hall can make the lunch decision easier.

Slow down at Shevlin Park

Shevlin is the quieter final stop. The water running through the park is Tumalo Creek, with footbridges and trails through forest and open areas. The park district describes nearly 1,000 acres, rather than a precise “over 1,000” figure.

For an easier outing, look at the creekside options on the official trail information and map. Choose a distance that works for your group, keep dogs leashed under park rules, and leave room for other people to enjoy the trail. A picnic and a modest walk are enough to make this stop worthwhile.

Make the day your own

You can skip the bike ride, swap the food stop, or spend the whole afternoon in the park. What makes the itinerary work is the balance: an activity, a satisfying lunch, and time outdoors without packing the schedule too tightly.
