Moving to Bend? Start with the address, not a generic provider list. Water and sewer service, garbage collection, school attendance areas and internet options can vary by property. Before you schedule anything, ask the seller, property manager or builder for the current providers and a recent bill, then confirm each service directly.

This checklist puts the highest-risk items first so you can avoid arriving without water, internet, school enrollment records or a plan for prescriptions.
Before closing or signing a lease
Confirm how the property is served
Do not assume that a Bend mailing address means the City of Bend supplies every utility. For the exact property, confirm:
- water provider, or whether the home uses a private well;
- sewer service, or whether the home has a septic system;
- electric and natural-gas providers;
- garbage and recycling hauler;
- fixed-internet providers available at the address; and
- the assigned public schools, if that matters to your household.
A recent utility bill is often the cleanest starting point. If the property is served by City of Bend water or sewer, the City says account changes must currently be handled by phone or in person; its start-or-stop service page has current contact details and hours.
If the home has a well or septic system, treat those as property due-diligence items rather than monthly account transfers. Ask for available records, maintenance history and inspection information before you close.
Check internet at the exact address
Provider coverage can change block by block, and an advertised service area does not prove that a specific home is ready for installation. Search the address on the FCC National Broadband Map, then confirm availability, installation timing and equipment directly with the provider. If you work from home, also ask the current occupant for a recent wired speed test and whether the connection has been reliable in the room you plan to use.
Verify the school assignment before relying on it
Bend-La Pine Schools assigns students according to attendance-area boundaries, and an address may not feed to the school that appears closest on a map. Use the district’s attendance-area information and enrollment guidance, then confirm the result with the district. If you are considering a choice option or an attendance-area change request, review the current application rules and dates rather than assuming a transfer will be available.
Protect continuity of care
Before the move, check your insurer’s current in-network directory and contact the practice you intend to use. Transfer medical records early, refill essential prescriptions with enough time for the move, and make a separate plan for specialists, pediatric care or ongoing treatment. Provider participation and new-patient availability can change, so confirm both directly instead of relying on an older directory or a general recommendation.
One to two weeks before moving
| Task | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Water and sewer | Provider, transfer date, deposit or account requirements, and whether service changes require a phone call or office visit. |
| Power and gas | Exact provider, start date, account holder information and access needed for a meter or technician. |
| Garbage and recycling | Address-specific hauler, cart delivery, pickup day and accepted materials. The City identifies Cascade Disposal and Republic Services as Bend’s waste companies, but confirm which one serves your address. |
| Internet | Install date, plan speed, data or equipment terms, and whether construction or landlord approval is required. |
| Submit your request through the official USPS change-of-address page and separately update banks, insurers, subscriptions and government records. | |
| School enrollment | Assigned school, registration documents, transportation details and any current deadlines. |
Keep confirmation numbers and start dates in one place. For a closing-day handoff, coordinate carefully with the seller so service is transferred without an unnecessary shutoff between accounts.
During your first 30 days in Oregon
Complete Oregon DMV steps
Oregon DMV’s New to Oregon guide says new residents must get an Oregon driver license, if they want to drive, and title and register their vehicle within 30 days. Use the official checklist to confirm identity, address, title and vehicle documents before going to an office. DMV offers both appointments and standby service for some transactions, so check the current instructions for the task you need rather than assuming every visit works the same way.
Update voter registration
You can register or update your address through the Oregon Secretary of State’s My Vote service. A new voter-registration application generally must be submitted at least 21 calendar days before an election, so do not leave this until a ballot is expected.
Sign up for local emergency alerts
Deschutes Alerts lets you opt in for phone, text or email notices tied to locations you care about, including your home, workplace or a child’s school. The system can send information about evacuations, severe weather, flooding, gas leaks and police activity. Add every relevant address and keep the contact information current.
Get connected after the essentials are running
Library access
Deschutes Public Library issues cards to eligible residents with photo identification and proof of a current Deschutes County address. Review the current card requirements before visiting. If you are deciding which Bend location to use, our Central Library visitor guide covers access, parking and practical trip planning.
Parks, classes and recreation
Bend Park & Recreation District manages parks, facilities and recreation programs separately from the City. You can browse its registration guidance and create an account for current activities. Popular programs can have defined registration windows, so check the live catalog rather than relying on a seasonal list from another site.
Neighborhood and city services
The City’s Connect page routes residents to issue reporting, service requests and department contacts. Bend’s neighborhood districts can also be a useful way to follow nearby projects and meetings after you know where you will live.
A Bend-specific setup sequence that works
- Verify the property systems. Water, sewer or septic, well, power, gas, waste and internet.
- Schedule anything that requires access. Internet installation, meter access or cart delivery.
- Secure continuity items. Prescriptions, health records, school documents and mail forwarding.
- Complete Oregon records. DMV and voter registration using official instructions.
- Add local safety and community tools. Emergency alerts, library access and recreation accounts.
If you are still comparing homes, include service setup in the property conversation. A house can be a good fit and still require extra planning for a well, septic system, limited broadband options or a school assignment that differs from your first assumption. Those details are easier to solve before the moving truck is booked.
