A game of sand volleyball, a shelf of DVDs and someone surfing a river wave: Bend can fit a surprising amount of personality into a short afternoon. Join David Keyte for a few of the small pleasures that give the town its character.

Start with a game
The outing opens with sand volleyball. It is a cheerful reminder to leave some unscheduled time in the day. You can spend weeks planning a Central Oregon adventure and still have a very good afternoon with a ball and a few people willing to play.
Then pick a movie, the old-fashioned way
Inside Bend’s Blockbuster, choosing a movie becomes something you do on your feet. There are shelves to browse and DVDs to consider. The familiar blue-and-yellow store has become a destination in its own right, and David’s visit includes a nod to the documentary about it.
Browse the Bend Blockbuster website for visiting information, then leave yourself a little time to wander. Half the pleasure is remembering the ritual.
A wave in the middle of town
The last stop trades the movie shelves for the river at Bend Whitewater Park. Surfers work the engineered wave while spectators watch from shore. It is a lively place to pause, even when getting in the water is nowhere on your agenda.
If you do plan to paddle or surf, read the park’s channel information and safety guidance first. The different channels serve different purposes.
A game, a little nostalgia and some time by the water make a pretty good afternoon. Find another local detour in the Check It Out collection.
