The trouble with a candy shop is that you can remember exactly what you liked at eight years old and still be tempted by everything else. Add gelato and a popcorn counter, and an afternoon in Bend starts to look pleasantly unserious.

David Keyte’s 2023 sweets tour runs from Sweet Tooth in the Old Mill District to Cravin’s and BrownBag Popcorn downtown. Come for something familiar. Leave room for an unexpected favorite.

Sweet Tooth: let the browsing begin

At Sweet Tooth Candy Shoppe, the first decision is whether to look for an old favorite or try something new. Sweet, sour and salty options all have their following. A small bag can become a souvenir, a gift or the thing you meant to save until after dinner.

Find Sweet Tooth at 450 Powerhouse Drive, Suite 402. The Old Mill District gives you plenty of ways to extend the visit, whether you have come for lunch, shopping or a little time by the river. A candy-shop detour fits neatly into all three.

A gelato pause at Cravin’s

Downtown, the pace slows at Cravin’s Candy Emporium. Gelato has a way of insisting on your attention. You can save a bag of candy for later; this part of the outing is best enjoyed right away.

The Downtown Bend directory lists Cravin’s at 818 NW Wall Street. Ask what is in the case, choose a flavor and give the afternoon a few minutes off. For hours or a specific request, the shop’s number is 541-617-9866.

BrownBag, and something to take home

The BrownBag Popcorn visit is built around tasting. David works through flavors before choosing a bag, a sensible approach when a familiar snack turns out to have quite a few possibilities.

Try the dependable favorite first. Then ask about something you would never have thought to order. Popcorn travels well, which makes this the part of the tour that can follow you home to a movie or a conversation around the kitchen counter.

Before a dedicated BrownBag trip, call 541-640-0646 to confirm the current storefront and hours. Its contact information is also in the downtown directory.

Lunch first, perhaps

Old Mill and downtown are separate stops, so choose the portion of the outing that suits your afternoon. There is a strong case for lunch followed by one treat. Our pizza tour can help with the first half of that plan.

Or save the sweets for a little reward after exploring Old Bend. A favorite town is made of small associations: a particular corner, a good meal, the place where you found a flavor you now order every time. There are more such discoveries in the Check It Out collection.
