A bakery morning needs very little organizing: a place to start, an appetite and enough room in the bag for something to take home. For David Keyte, that means an Ocean Roll at Sparrow, a stop at Nancy P’s and a loaf of striata from Village Baker. Breakfast begins in Northwest Crossing. Dinner might already be taking shape by the time you leave the last counter.

Cardamom has the first word
At Sparrow Bakery, the Ocean Roll gets top billing. David points out the cardamom, vanilla and sugar during the opening visit. It is the sort of pastry that can make a person unusually decisive at a bakery counter. There is also a croque monsieur in the mix, which makes a convincing argument for ordering something savory alongside it.
This is Sparrow’s Northwest Crossing bakery, at 2748 NW Crossing Drive, Suite 110. Set aside a little time for breakfast and the streets around it. Our Northwest Crossing outing offers a longer look at the neighborhood; the separate Discovery West visit stops at Sparrow Mercado.
Nancy P’s leaves lunch open to suggestion
The next counter belongs to Nancy P’s Bakery & Café, near Newport Avenue Market at 1054 NW Milwaukee Avenue. Here, pastries share the conversation with coffee and sandwiches. Come in thinking breakfast and a savory pastry pocket might settle it. Come in later and a sandwich on house-baked bread could change the plan.
That is a good reason to leave the order undecided until you arrive. A neighborhood bakery earns its place in the week by being useful in several ways: coffee with a friend, something quick before work, lunch when you have a little longer. Watch the Nancy P’s stop for a look around, then see what appeals at the counter.
The loaf that follows you home
At Village Baker, the outing changes from eating now to thinking about later. David holds up a striata loaf and gets straight to the important part: “Extremely chewy interior and crunchy exterior.”
His suggestions are equally direct. Put it beside soup or stew. Bring out olive oil and Parmesan. A loaf like that makes dinner feel half planned before you have opened the refrigerator. You can see it in the last stop of the tour.
The bakery and café are at 1470 SW Knoll Avenue. Browse the bread selection and baking schedule if you have a particular loaf in mind. A quick call is worthwhile for a special order.
Leave room in the bag
These stops sit in different parts of west Bend, so give the morning some breathing room. Check the linked hours before planning all three; the bakeries do not share the same weekly schedule. A pastry to enjoy now and bread to take home may be exactly enough.
For something to go with the loaf, continue to our Newport Avenue Market and Sebastian’s tour. Or take the bread home, put on a pot of soup and call the outing a success. There will be another morning for the rest of the Check It Out collection.
