At Bend Relo, we don’t just sell houses; we sell the Central Oregon lifestyle. And what defines life in Bend more than its unparalleled access to the outdoors? From the towering peaks of the Cascade Mountains to the flowing waters of the Deschutes River, Bend is a four-season playground for every type of adventurer. To help you explore, here’s a local guide to Bend that highlights these wonderful offerings.

If you’re considering moving here, or are a new resident looking to graduate from the tourist trails, this guide is your key to unlocking the true local experience in Bend’s magnificent recreation scene.

đźšµ Summer: Mountain Biking, Hiking, and Water Trails

When the snow melts and the sun shines (which is often, thanks to our high-desert climate!), Bend transforms into a mountain biker’s and hiker’s paradise.

For the Hikers & Trail Runners:

  • The Classic Local Escape: Shevlin Park. Just minutes from the west side of town, this is your go-to for a quick, peaceful forest run or walk. The Shevlin Loop Trail follows Tumalo Creek through dense Ponderosa pines—it feels remote but is wonderfully accessible year-round.

  • The Iconic Landmark: Pilot Butte. This cinder cone right in the middle of town offers a quick, challenging climb with a 360-degree panoramic view of Bend, the high desert, and the entire Cascade range. It’s the best spot for an early morning workout.

  • The Waterfall Reward: Tumalo Falls. Located a short drive west, the lower viewpoint is an easy walk to a stunning 97-foot waterfall. For a longer, more rewarding hike, continue up the trail alongside Tumalo Creek to see several smaller, picturesque cascades.

For the Mountain Bikers:

  • The Mecca: Phil’s Trail Complex. This is arguably the most famous trail network in Central Oregon. Located on the west side of Bend, Phil’s offers hundreds of miles of flowy, single-track heaven for all skill levels. It’s a key part of the local culture!

  • The Summer Lift Access: Head up to Mt. Bachelor’s Bike Park in the summer months for challenging downhill terrain accessed via chairlift—perfect for riders who love elevation drops without the climb.

On the Water:

  • Floating the Deschutes: This is the quintessential Bend summer activity. Grab an inner tube or paddleboard and float the gentle stretch of the Deschutes River that winds right through the Old Mill District. A local trick? Use the “River Tube” shuttle service to manage the portage.

  • Paddling the Cascade Lakes: For a quieter experience, head up the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (open roughly June–October) to lakes like Sparks Lake or Elk Lake. The views of South Sister and Broken Top from the water are simply breathtaking.

⛷️ Winter: The Snowy Wonderland

Bend doesn’t hibernate; it layers up! Our winters are defined by access to world-class snow sports just a 30-minute drive from your door.

  • Alpine Sports: Mt. Bachelor is the largest ski resort in the Pacific Northwest, offering over 4,300 acres of skiable terrain. The deep, light powder and long season make it a destination for downhill skiers and snowboarders alike.

  • Nordic/Backcountry: Bend is a true Nordic hub. Visit the many Sno-Parks (like Virginia Meissner or Wanoga) for miles of groomed trails perfect for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking. Remember your Sno-Park Permit!

  • Snowshoeing: A peaceful way to experience the winter forest is by snowshoeing to iconic spots like the frozen Tumalo Falls—a spectacular sight without the summer crowds.

⛰️ Year-Round Gems (That Require a Quick Drive)

Every local knows that some of the best adventures are just outside city limits:

  • Rock Climbing and Hiking: Smith Rock State Park (about 35 minutes north) is famous worldwide for rock climbing and offers stunning high-desert hiking paths like the challenging Misery Ridge Trail—an incredible experience, especially in the cooler spring and fall.

  • Caving: Explore the region’s volcanic past by visiting the Lava River Cave at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. It’s a mile-long tube that offers a cool, unique underground adventure (open seasonally).
