By lunchtime, it is nice to have a better answer than whatever happens to be in the car. A bowl with something interesting in it. A salad you actually look forward to. A juice stop that turns into a proper meal.

David Keyte has a few places in mind. This Bend outing visits Fix & Repeat, Active Culture and Mother’s Juice Cafe, moving from the Box Factory to Riverside Boulevard and on to a beet salad worth sitting down for.

Fix & Repeat: lunch in the Box Factory

At Fix & Repeat, the drinks are a good starting point, but they need not be the whole order. Bowls and toasts sit alongside juices and smoothies on the plant-based menu. The café is one of David’s regular favorites, and the first stop in the tour.

Find it in the Box Factory at 555 NW Arizona Avenue, Suite 50. You can preorder when the lunch break is short, or take a little longer and explore the surrounding shops. That flexibility is part of a good café’s usefulness: it works for the day you have, rather than the leisurely one you meant to plan.

A rice bowl with a few surprises

At Active Culture, an old gas-station setting gives way to a very different sort of refueling. David takes a look around, then settles into the Bend Rice Bowl. The name is modest; the combination is more interesting.

The Bend menu brings together brown rice, prosciutto, gouda, apple, dates, basil and lemon vinaigrette. Sweet, savory and a little sharp are all invited. Watch the tasting for David’s introduction, or head to 285 NW Riverside Boulevard to make your own choice.

The menu includes both plant-based meals and dishes with meat or dairy. That makes it worth a look when the people at your table have different lunches in mind.

Mother’s, and a reason to stop on Galveston

The last meal brings a beet salad and Bright Eyes juice to the table at Mother’s. It is an appealing finish to a tour built around colorful food and places you could easily work into an ordinary week.

For a visit, start with Mother’s westside location at 1255 NW Galveston Avenue. Its food and smoothie pages cover breakfast and lunch as well as drinks. Look at the day’s menu, find something that sounds good and give yourself time to eat it. A lunch break improves considerably when it is actually a break.

Build a lunch list you will use

Keep these three in mind for different days. The Box Factory might suit an afternoon of browsing. Riverside Boulevard could fit a walk. Galveston may simply be on your way home. Choose the meal first and let the rest of the afternoon remain open.

Follow the linked menus for current dishes and serving hours, and speak with the café about any specific dietary requirements. Then move on to the enjoyable part: deciding what to order.

For another meal-centered outing, explore Old Bend, or leave room for a pastry on our bakery tour. The Check It Out collection is full of reasons to take the long way to lunch.
