There is a show at the amphitheater tonight, but the afternoon is still wide open. Enough time for the riverfront, a look through a gear shop and perhaps a new game to bring home. Pizza can take care of the rest.

David Keyte’s shopping-district tour starts in the Old Mill, heads to the Box Factory and finishes downtown. Along the way, the stops offer three very different answers to what you might like to do next weekend.

The Old Mill before the music

The tour opens on a Friday with a concert ahead at Hayden Homes Amphitheater. David stops by the ticket area, then waits for a table at Greg’s Grill. The riverfront deck gives the beginning of the outing a good setting of its own.

Plan a show through the amphitheater’s current calendar, or simply spend some time among the Old Mill shops and restaurants. A meal before an evening event can be more than the thing you fit in between parking and finding your seat. Give it a little time.

Gear Fix is an invitation to make another plan

In the Box Factory, the first browsing stop is Gear Fix. Used and consignment outdoor equipment gives the visit a pleasantly unpredictable quality. You may arrive looking for one thing and discover another reason to get outside.

David likes the possibility of finding gear with plenty of useful life left in it. Take a close look at condition and fit, ask the staff about an item and resist the temptation to buy for an activity you only vaguely intend to try. Or, at least, make an actual plan to try it.

Modern Games supplies a different kind of adventure

At Modern Games, the next expedition can fit on a table. Puzzles and tabletop games shift the afternoon away from outdoor equipment without losing the sense of possibility.

It is an appealing pairing of shops. One gets you thinking about a trail or a trip; the other gives friends a reason to come over. Browse for something you already know you enjoy, or ask for a recommendation suited to the people who will be playing.

Downtown, the decision is a slice

The final stop brings the outing to Pizza Mondo. After a few shops and a change of neighborhoods, a slice is a satisfying answer to the lunch question. Check the selection, find something you like and let the shopping bags rest for a while.

Our pizza tour gives Mondo a longer visit alongside other stops around town. This time, it is the reward at the end of the wander.

Three districts, one loose plan

Start where it makes sense for the day you have. The Old Mill can be a riverfront meal before a concert. The Box Factory can be an afternoon of browsing. Downtown can be a pizza stop with time left for a few more blocks.

Check the current business hours and leave room between destinations. The pleasure is in finding something you did not expect to come home with—even if that turns out to be the plan for your next outing. Explore more local days in Check It Out.
